Global value chains and knowledge spillover to local economy in Visegrad 4 countries

Abstract This study empirically examines knowledge spillover in Visegrad Four (V4) countries, with an emphasis on global value chains (GVCs). Using patent statistics, the aims to estimate production function, including domestic and foreign stocks, found that international does not contribute much innovation of local economy V4 countries because three factors: i) multinational corporations' (MNCs) strategy locate a low-cost base, ii) MNCs' supporting (process, or non-core product related) research development (R&D) activities iii) limited technology effect from MNCs firms. Local firms became dependent peripheral products technologies provided by MNCs, as result, R&D were diverted patentable innovation.
